Lovely mountain cows

Cattle are ruminants, meaning that they have a digestive system that allows use of otherwise indigestible foods by regurgitating and rechewing them as “cud”. The cud is then reswallowed and further digested by specialised microorganisms in the rumen. These microbes are primarily responsible for decomposing cellulose and other carbohydrates into volatile fatty acids that cattle use as their primary metabolic fuel. The microbes inside the rumen are also able to synthesize amino acids from non-protein nitrogenous sources, such as urea and ammonia. As these microbes reproduce in the rumen, older generations die and their carcasses continue on through the digestive tract. These carcasses are then partially digested by the cattle, allowing them to gain a high quality protein source. These features allow cattle to thrive on grasses and other vegetation. [Wikipedia]

Training a pigeon to be your cycling partner

Do you have a cycling partner? Cycling alone can be boring, but some people may take the “look for a partner” too far. Jeff Daniel, from Wigan (UK) races his pigeon. He goes in his bike, the pigeon flies.

He raised his pigeon (Prince) since he was just a few weeks old, thus the bird considers Jeff his parent.

But he was the first surprised after the bird started following him when he went jogging.

He started to increase the distance between Prince and him, whistling the bird to come back to his hand. And then one day, he started cycling, with the bird flying alongside.

Yvonne the cow is caught after three months on the run

The Bavarian cow became a celebrity when she escaped from her farm and managed to elude capture for three months.
Finally a farmer spotted Yvonne on his farm . She did not go quietly to her new home at an animal sanctuary, according to the Guardian; she had to be tranquilized and loaded onto a trailer.

It is good news and bad news for Yvonne. She will live out the rest of her days in comfort, but she has lost her freedom.

The female elephant – aided by her baby – survived the attack and was seen feeding from the river later in the day.

An unlucky pigeon takes its final look at the world – peeking out from a pelican’s beak. The little bird had been eating near a pond in St James Park, London, when it was scooped up by the much bigger bird. Adults and children watched in horror as the pigeon tried desperately to escape for 15 minutes. At one point it looked like it was going to break free as the pelican opened its beak, allowing the pigeon to gaze out. But the startled creature missed its opportunity and was swallowed whole. Photographer Paul Mansfield, 44, captured the remarkable scene while on a day trip to the capital with his family.

Photographer Steve Shinn caught the moment luck ran out for one poor gopher. Steve was snapping great egrets in California when he captured an egret sneaking up on a gopher and then skewering and gobbling it down.

A lucky seal launches itself to safety from the mouth of a great white shark – using the predator’s razor sharp teeth for leverage. Photographer Chris Fallows, 38, watched as the Cape fur seal darted left and right in a desperate bid to evade the vicious 11-foot-long shark. The massive creature failed to get a proper grip allowing the seal to launch itself to safety as the shark tried to get a second bite. Miraculously, the seal escaped with a minor flesh wound off Seal Island in False Bay, Cape Town, South Africa.

Siberian tigers look up waiting for a chicken to land at the Siberian Tiger Park in Harbin, China. Visitors to the park can buy birds for 50 yuan (£4.50), pieces of meat, or even a live calf to be fed to the tigers.

Adult brown bears hunt for salmon at the Brooks River in Katmai National Park near Bristol Bay, Alaska.

Fisherman Valery Krugersky was stunned when a cheeky frog jumped into his net – and swallowed his catch whole. The frog lay in wait in a lake near Chernigov, Ukraine, for the fisherman to get a bite before pouncing on the fish in his homemade net.

A mouse looks out from the jaws of a huge voracious African bullfrog. These carnivorous amphibians have an aggressive temper and can jump 3.5 metres.

Madhuri, an Indian elephant, swings a monitor lizard around by its tail. The unlucky creature had been swept off the ground and was carried around for a number of days by the elephant. With its tail firmly clamped in the animal’s trunk the lizard was swung around and occasionally put back on the ground. The scene was captured by Jagdeep Rajput during a trip to Corbett National Park in India.

A cat shows interest in a frog sitting on a rock in the eastern German town of Sieversdorf.

A lion attacks a pangolin in the Selous Game Reserve in in Tanzania. Passing the pangolin around like a football, inquisitive lions spent hours trying to devour the armour-plated creature. British wildlife guide Mark Sheridan captured the action during a tour of the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. In the end the lions gave up and wandered off in search of something else and the pangolin escaped.

This tiny starling didn’t stand a chance when a hungry bald eagle swooped in for a mid-air snack. The bird flies on, unaware of the enormous predator closing in behind it.

A duck flies off in alarm as an osprey swoops in to catch its lunch. The photo was captured by photographer Lee Fisher at a lake in the highlands of Scotland.

This is the moment an osprey swooped down and snatched a trout straight out of the water. Wildlife photographer Mark Hancox waited for seven hours in a cramped hide on the shores of Loch Garten, Scotland, before the bird caught its prey.

A courageous vole takes on a coyote a hundred times his size in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The tiny rodent’s chances of survival looked slim when he was plucked out of the snow by the hungry predator but he stood his ground.

A jaguar and a caiman battle in the Pantanal region of Brazil. Eventually the big cat defeated the reptile in the vicious encounter, which was captured on camera by French photographer Patrick Fagot.

There are some seriously bizarre and funny signs tucked away in the zoos and wildlife parks of the world. Some are dumb, some are witty, some are cruel and some are silly. Santa Claus his best fur-lined suit to feed a beluka at Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, an aquarium in Yokohama, Japan.

This meerkat at the London Zoo is eager to get to its mealworm treat, but has discovered that not having opposable thumbs makes that a challenge.

This snow-leopard cub, which lives in the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, might be adjusted to the warm Southern California weather, but it apparently hasn’t figured out that the cardboard gingerbread men aren’t as tasty as the real ones.

After the run of unwrapping presents comes the drudgery of cleaning up the wrapping paper as this glum-looking chimp at lion contry Safari in West Palm Beach.

This Kodiak bear apparently got exactly what it wanted for Christmas from the staff at Taronga Zoo.

One might imagine that an elephant would be a great asset in decking high and hard to reach places with Christmas decorations. The trick is to keep the pachyderms, like these two at Germany’s Rostock Zoo, from chowing down on a tasty pine-needle goodie.

Zoo keepers a Taronga Zoo apparently forgot to tell these young lions that it’s customary to remove the wrapping paper before devouring a Christmas treat. The kids are so cute on Christmas morning.

It’s important to make sure that the older folks feel included in holiday festivities, too. This zookeeper at Ueno Zoo is doing his part by giving this 76-year old tortoise, a Galapagos geezer, a Christmas snack.

Coati bear Diego, a resident of the Hanover Zoo in Germany.

These two Cape penguins at Hakkeijima Sea Paradise aquarium, though adorable in their holiday attire, demonstrate why Santa decided to locate his workshop at the North Pole rather than the South fewer fowl underfoot.

Baby Honduran White Bats

So I know a lot of people have a fear of bats and I can see where that can come from, since the bats that you typically think of probably aren’t the most attractive or friendly. But if you don’t think this little bat is cute then I’m sorry there’s really something much more serious wrong with you.

At just 37-47 mm long, this teeny-tiny bat reminds me of those marshmallows you put in your hot cocoa.

These little marshmallows are quite the craftsmen which is why their other name is the Honduran White Tent Bat. They cut the side veins of the Heliconia plant, causing them to fold down and form a large “tent.” They cling to the roof of the tent in small colonies (usually around a dozen) with one male and several females.

Mickey Mouse.

Mickey Mouse is an Academy Award-winning comic animal cartoon character who has become an icon for The Walt Disney Company. Donald Duck.

Donald Duck is an animated cartoon and comic-book character from Walt Disney Productions. Donald is a white anthropomorphic duck with yellow-orange bill, legs, and feet. As of 2007, it is syndicated in roughly 2,570 newspapers and journals and it currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip. The popularity of the strip has led to an animated television series, several animated television specials and two theatrical feature-length live-action films, as well as a large amount of Garfield merchandise.

Speedy Gonzales

Speedy Gonzales “the fastest mouse in all Mexico”, is an animated cartoon mouse from the Warner Brothers Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons. Speedy’s major traits are his ability to run extremely fast, and his comedic Mexican accent. He usually wears an oversized yellow sombrero, a white shirt and trousers, and a red ascot.

Pluto.

Pluto (formerly known as Pluto the Pup) is an animated cartoon character made famous in a series of Disney short cartoons. He has most frequently appeared as Mickey Mouse’s pet dog. He also had an independent starring role in a number of Disney shorts in the 1940s and 1950s. Pluto is unusual for a Disney character in that he is not anthropomorphized beyond showing an unusually broad range of facial expressions or use of his front paws at key points; he is actually represented as a normal dog (unlike Goofy who is an anthropomorphic dog).

Bambi.

Bambi is a 1942 American animated film produced by Walt Disney and based on the book Bambi, A Life in the Woods by Austrian author Felix Salten. The film was released by RKO Radio Pictures on August 13, 1942, and it is the fifth film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series.
Bambi is a white-tailed deer who lives in the woods with his friends : Thumper (a pink-nosed rabbit), and Flower (a skunk), and his childhood friend and future mate, Faline.

We all love fresh flowers in the house, and our animals are no exception.

Especially drawn to fresh cut flowers and plants are indoor cats, who have a dietary requirement for greens that they will sometimes attempt to satisfy by chewing on the lovely flowers you brought home from the grocery store. But beware, there are a wide variety of flowers and plants that are poisonous to your pets! Especially dangerous are many varieties of lilies.

All photography was originally monochrome, or black-and-white. Even after color film was readily available, black-and-white photography continued to dominate for decades, due to its lower cost and its “classic” photographic look.
The vibrancy of color can, at times, actually detract from the desired photographic effect. Subtle effects of texture and lighting that can be lost in color photographs will stand out in black and white photography.
Black and white photos can add an air of romance, class, timelessness and mystery to otherwise ordinary photographs.
Without the distraction of color, other elements of photography stand out in black and white photos.

Clothing for chickens

A range of fashion clothing for chickens has been launched by a group of designers working in Austria and Japan, including jackets, suits, and custom t-shirts.

Austrian Edgar Honetschlaeger said he decided to work with the Japanese on the project because he hoped to make the chicken label clothing essential.
Several farmers have already had chicken suits with the name of their farm ordered and many advertisers have enquired about the possibility of having sponsored suits promoting everything from KFC to chicken soup.

The chicken suits come in various sizes, and had their first presentation in the Austrian pavilion of the World exhibition in Nagoya, Japan, where 20 chickens paraded a catwalk with Mozart music playing in the background.
The chicken suit collection will continue its world-wide tour.

Pug uses pushchair to walk puppies

Jenny the pug has taken puppy love to a whole new level, after taking to pushing toy dogs around in a pushchair.Jenny’s owner, Ellen Zessin, a children’s book artist from Portland, Oregon, US, explains: “Jenny loved the little stuffed pugs we got for her right from the beginning and was forever picking them up in her mouth and mothering them.
We thought pugs were meant to be docile, yet Jenny was so full of love and energy.”
Determined their dog should make the most of her boundless energy Ellen and husband Mark took Jenny to dog agility classes where she quickly excelled.
With the classes over, Jenny was determined to show her precious pugs they hadn’t been forgotten and kept putting her babies into an old pink toy pushchair.
“She looked so sweet an idea hit me,” Ellen remembers.
“Jenny had been so good at dog agility maybe I could get her to push the stroller around.”
Jenny needed no encouragement and quickly got the hang of it.
She showed such a knack for it that Ellen asked their vet if it was okay for Jenny to walk on her hind legs for a few seconds.
When he gave the thumbs up Ellen and Mark decided to let Jenny have some pushchair fun.
Early one morning they took Jenny down to walk the streets of Portland and filmed the experience for their son Steve who is away at university in Florida.
Ellen says: “We always send Steve a video letter every month of what me, Mark and Jenny have been up to, and we knew he’d love to see Jenny’s latest skills.”
The family video ended up on the video-sharing website and overnight became an Internet sensation.
“We had so many lovely messages from people around the world – it was incredible,” says Ellen.
Now the pug’s a star in her own right since she appeared on local TV news and accompanying poster billboards.
“Jenny’s a real celebrity,” Ellen says. “But it’s her babies that come first.”
Now Jenny’s next trick is learning to surf and unsurprisingly she’s mastered it with only one request – that her babies ride along next to her!?

Photographs capture baby panda as it tries to escape playpen

The images of Wen Li and her twin sister Ya Li were taken at the Chengdu Giant Panda Research Institute.

They show Wen Li struggling up the side of her playpen, before losing her balance and toppling over the side. Fortunately the panda cub was caught by one of her handlers before hitting the floor.

Wen Li and Ya Li were born on July 19, 2009. Just two other pandas were born at the institute in the same year, compared to 18 born in 2008.

Researches have argued that mothers at the institute were simply too “exhausted” to have any more babies.

The institute was set up 1987 with six pandas rescued from the wild. Just over two decades later it is home to 83 giant pandas, about a third of the total pandas kept in captivity in China.

They are a source of national pride in China and their dwindling numbers have become a countrywide concern. They are the rarest type of bears and, with fewer than 3,000 still in the wild, are considered to be among the world’s most endangered species

Locusts use visual guidance system to see where they walk

In a series of experiments, researchers observed the insects climbing a ladder while a high speed camera caught every stumble and missed step.

The locusts’ task was made more difficult by having one eye painted over, or having their antennae or front leg sensors removed.

The scientists also watched what happened when a rung of the ladder was removed mid-step.

They discovered that, rather than ”feeling” their way, the insects relied on vision to pinpoint every foothold.

Humans and other mammals do much the same thing, though in a more complex fashion.

The locusts displayed a level visual brain processing previously thought to be too sophisticated for insects, according to the scientists.

Dr Jeremy Niven, from Cambridge University, who led the study reported in the journal Current Biology, said: ”Visually guided limb control is often thought to be complicated and require sophisticated computations because you have to place your limb in a position you can only see, not touch.

”The visual control of limb placement in the locusts suggests that this can be achieved by much smaller-brained insects. It’s another example of insects performing a behaviour we previously thought was restricted to relatively big-brained animals with sophisticated motor control, such as humans, monkeys or octopuses.”

The study revealed some key differences between the way locusts and humans walk.

Having no binocular vision, the insects rely on visual input from a single eye to control leg movements on that side of their body.

Unlike humans and other mammals, such as cats, locusts also commit themselves to a particular foothold before lifting a leg. If something changes mid-step, they miss their target.

In contrast, a human will be watching for unexpected hazards while taking a step and can make adjustments if necessary.

It was a long fascination with insect vision that led Dr Niven to investigate locust ladder walking.

”Most studies of insect vision have concentrated on insects using vision during flight because insects such as bees and flies do spend a lot of time flying,” he said.

”Other insects, such as stick insects, crickets and cockroaches, spend a lot of time walking, but they all have relatively small eyes and long antennae to ‘feel’ their way through the environment.

”Locusts spend time both walking and flying and have short antennae and large eyes. This started us thinking about whether it was possible for locusts to use vision to find footholds.”

He added: ”The study really emphasises how insects can achieve similar results to vertebrates like humans or cats with few neurons, probably by simpler mechanisms.”
